Seduto
sulla tredicesima sedia della tavola rotonda
narrava storie d’amore tra rumorose risate
e bagliori di spade e alabarde. Nei suoi occhi
erano ombre

pesante e unico. Faccio fatica a sfogliarlo. Passo
senza spezzare i miei sogni.

Je me demande en me promenant

The Return: a novel without a plot

This novel that I read is a mystery. I think it
flipping through the pages during the walk
along the steep and rugged coast
from Lake of Salto without looking up. There are no characters
and not even a plot.
Behind me
a thick forest of beech, oaks and chestnut. To my feet
the lake recalls that a man stopped the flow of water
with a bar of fire and cement.
In the silence of the trees, the water created
an even more beautiful landscape. A light wind
accompanies my reading as if I were
under the lamp swinging on the door of the my house.
A novel
of dawns and sunsets
landscapes we breathe as far as the eye could see
on the blue peaks of mountains along the banks
of bright turquoise seas.
So begins my return to Sicilia
in the garden of the house where my father with his beret on his head
that peasants using on the threshold of their slums
was sitting in the secular shadow of a silver linden,
surrounded by old Knights Templar.
Sitting
on the thirteenth chair of the round table
he was narrating love stories amid resonant laughter
and the glares of swords and halberds. In his eyes
they were shadows
with the appearance of living men with marked faces
by the helmets and the white tunics
stained with blood crosses at the chest.
Even my father was a shadow that wandered
in the house and in the garden
was tearing off wild grass, was following the exploits of the great
persecutors, asked questions
which no one was could answer.
My father was asking to thes shadows how many years is left
before the war stops, before the human race
ends up being extinct. But maybe
they were not even questions.
Walking I wonder
if in the novel I will find the return in which my mother who embraces me
and shows me the horizons I’ve missed in my life
and on the beach of my solitary thoughts the white dancer
who stopped to love me. She is not afraid
of the man. Man does not exist
between the pages of this novel. There is only the return to window
wide open to look by my house
the volcano and the giants
with only one fiery eye in the middle of the forehead.
From thresholds of their caves
every day, they scrutinize into the waves the blacks and heavy
shreds of heart thrown into the sea. Nobody answers.
The snowy volcano raises gray sighs of smoke
and opens his mighty red arms on the tender flesh
of countryside around to reap the fruits
like suns rising among the green curtains of the trees.

I read very slowly,
I taste each word each line each period
every pause of a new paragraph, to feel to the bottom of my flesh
the wait for the moment when I’ll be sure I’m sure how it’s going to end.
I will need time and will to resist
to the effort to keep in my hands the most numerous
pages of this unique
and heavy volume. I can hardly leaf through it. I pass
lightly fingers on each page.
I know pages can flip through
alone even if I sleep with my head resting on your chest
and they will arrive at the end of this novel
without breaking my dreams.
